Josh McDaniels: "The Magic Man"

Change is the epitome of life and our decisions. Time had come for change in the Denver Broncos organization and apart of that change was a new head coach.

After 14 unforgettable seasons and 2 Super Bowl wins with the Broncos, Mike Shanahan’s time was done. It was time for a new face to take the reins and get this team back on track. This new change came on January 12, 2009 when owner Pat Bowlen introduced a new head coach that will give the Broncos (fans included) new hope for the upcoming season.

I give you, Josh McDaniels, the 12th head coach in Broncos history.

At 33 years old, he is the fifth-youngest head coach in NFL history at the time of his hire with the Broncos and is the second-youngest active head coach in the league.

This is only the beginning of the Josh McDaniels story.

Born in Barberton, Ohio on April 22, 1976, was a young boy that would later become an NFL head coach, something only so many dream about, let alone make it reality. McDaniels grew up in one of the most football-wealthy regions in the country as a quarterback and kicker at Canton McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio.

He competed for a program, located near the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which has received national recognition for its success. His high school played their games at Fawcett Stadium, the same place the annual Hall of Fame Game is played.

McDaniels went on to be recruited by John Carroll University as a quarterback, however he spent most of his college career as a wide receiver from 1995-1998. He graduated from the school in University Heights, Ohio in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

McDaniels joined Pro Football Hall of Fame Head Coach Don Shula as John Carroll alumni.

After his graduation in 1999, McDaniels began his coaching career at Michigan State University as a graduate assistant. While he had the privilege to work along side Head Coach Nick Saban, he was apart of the staff and team that helped the Spartans reach a 10-2 winning record including a Citrus Bowl victory.

Soon enough March 1, 2001 came around and that is when Josh McDaniels began his NFL coaching career by joining the New England Patriots as a personal assistant in scouting players. In the first three years of his NFL career he served as an assistant to the defensive coaching staff.

In 2004, he moved up the ladder and became the quarterbacks coach for the Patriots. Two years later in 2006, he received another title in addition to QB coach, Offensive Coordinator.

During his 8-year run with New England, he was apart of three Super Bowl wins in 2001 (XXXVI), 2003 (XXXVIII) and 2004 (XXXIX).

For three straight seasons (2006-2008), McDaniels had a hand in making the Patriots stand out from all the other teams.

He helped direct the offense in leading the NFL with an average of 28.8 points per game, ranking 2nd in the league with 370.8 yards per game, allowing only 63 turnovers in 3 seasons while also ranking fourth in the league on third-downs (44.4%).

With the amount of talent the Broncos have we will surely surprise doubters, when they see the "magic" McDaniels can work in with his new team.

It will be a sight to see, mark my words.

While he earned his way up to higher ground with the Patriots, he worked on a personal level with Tom Brady and helped him earn several Pro Bowl trips. He lent a helping hand to Brady’s success and one can only imagine what McDaniels could do for an underrated quarterback like Kyle Orton in Denver.

The success McDaniels was a part of in coaching Tom Brady turned the New England franchise into something other teams envied.

Then when you take the time to reflect on what McDaniels did with Matt Cassel when Brady got a season-ending injury at the beginning of the 2008 season, the possibilities he could give Denver are endless.

With a quarterback that has been frowned upon and underestimated, McDaniels will surely work his "magic" with Kyle Orton and turn him into something special for the Broncos.

Orton has the potential to become a great quarterback and I truly believe his time has come now that Denver has McDaniels as their head coach.

Surely, it could take a few years for this team to turn into a real success or this 2009 season could start the success this team has been lacking for a decade. With the amount of talent, leadership and teamwork this team will show this season, our playoff hopes could become reality for the first time since 2005.

Not only do we have better chances of reaching the playoffs, it’s time we reclaim the AFC West division. It belongs to the Broncos, plain and simple.

Head Coach McDaniels could be the difference in all that. Based on the success he had in New England, he has the ability to completely turn this team around for the better.

Both McDaniels and Orton are with a new team this season and Orton will have the chance to learn a new offense. This change could become epic for this team. This is like a brand new team and as fans, we have no idea what to expect. The difference between this team and the 2008 team we had last year could turn out to be positive or negative for the Broncos.

However, I encourage every Bronco fan out there to look at this situation in a positive light. Instead of thinking “they will be worse this year” or “Orton will just fall short like always”, your power of positive thinking will go farther than you can imagine.

It isn’t easy to be positive especially after the dead-end seasons we’ve had but we owe it to our Broncos to support them. Life is not a certainty when it comes to football, but we do have the ability to remain positive for the sake of this team.

This is the time to support our new team AND new coach while also watching this new season unfold.

Every fan should give all the new players and coaches a chance to prove themselves and show what they can turn this team into. The players and coaches are excited and enthusiastic about the new season and changes.

I say the time has come for the fans to join in on that excitement.

Josh McDaniels has had plenty of success in his career and one can only imagine how successful he could make the new Denver Broncos team. It is a very exciting time in this organization and what a thrill it would be to celebrate the 50th anniversary with a blowout season.

I hear a winning season knocking on our door and McDaniels is here to help make it happen. Our Broncos feed off the excitement and support of their fans in the same way we feed off the production and success of the players and coaches.

Positive thoughts breed positive results.

The 2009 season is upon us in full force.
Get ready Bronco fans!

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL, that's a start florio... keep working on it. You'll get through it. Its best that you figured out this problem before it was too late. hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  27. you are the one that called me flo!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wouldn't have thought of calling you flo had you not said people are shrinking your name, it just came to me. And when I called you flo, this was THE last thing on my mind. You brought "it" up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. im surprised your not offended or something princess because one time one of my girlfriends and another guy got into a similiar conversation and she got kinda mad at me.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good job Ashley. You're da' bomb. (didn't like my "death and taxes" thing, eh? Ha, ha)The list has grown, thanks to "yours truly" and will grow more. I have already asked others to check out the site and sign up when they get a chance. Keep in mind that as it grows and the season gets going (and camp), the focus will turn more to Bronco talk and less chit chat (except late night where we rule, ha, ha. Oh, except floria, I mean florio, who is on Internet curfew, ha, ha. Just kidding florio, I still love you, man). Which is fine. I think we've all bonded well enough and talked about every trivial thing we could possibly think of. Football is our main thing and to build a fan base. Just remember, that when I go to Fan Huddle, I will still contribute to this site with 2 articles a week. One on Friday to give the weekly matchup and another on Monday morning to recap the game (unless I'm seriously hung over, ha, ha). Just kidding.... sort of. Our main goal is to make this site click with the fans and make them want to come here. Anyways, when I start up writing at Fan Huddle, I would appreciate you guys to "pop in periodically and blog there as well. The more fanbase I bring, the better I get paid.

As for McDaniels, what people seem to forget (those who bashed him for his FA and draft choices) is that he was, as Ashley said, a personal assistant to the scouting department. He knows talent. I trust his choices and have high hopes for his picks. Who can't love Moreno, the best RB out of college or Ayers, projected by sports analyst's to be the surprise defensive rookie of the year. We have McKinley, who I think will really shine, much like Royal did. Maybe not right away, but after Stokley retires, he will be the put in to the group and Royal will possibly be moved to the slot. I think Fields will do well and Baker will eventually fill the spot. I like Seth Olson. Big kid. Open those holes for Knowshon. I like that he kept the Oline intact. I like that he kept Casey. I like that he isn't letting Marshall have his way (so far). I like Orton as our QB. Hey, I just "like", OK?

    ReplyDelete
  31. well then its chris's fault cuz he called me flor.

    ReplyDelete
  32. see you guys later. football practice.

    bye

    ReplyDelete
  33. later aunt flo ,ha ha just kidding

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey Dave, thanks for the feeback and help. You're awesome!

And no one said anything about "it" to offend me... yet. I'm all for dropping this subject though, grosses me out.

    Later florio!

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL, nice one #80!! That was good!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sure, florio leaves when I come on and I leave, then he comes on. I AIN'T FEELIN' NO LUV, HERE, MAN!

    ReplyDelete
  37. yeah lets drop that subject, anyways princess, how you been?

    ReplyDelete
  38. im here to love you man. And i am on when other people are, see. ha

    ReplyDelete
  39. haha, I liked all that you wanted me to add to that one section Dave... just wanted to make it more of my article. I know if I had put that in there it would've been a little obvious I didn't come up with it. But as you can see, you gave me an idea to go with.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You're welcome Ashley. Don't let word out that I'm "awesome." People will expect that of me and actually start to believe it and THEN WHAT? Total chaos is what! Total loss of reason and, and... Oh, never mind, I lost train of thought.

    ReplyDelete
  41. oh, im not sure if i said this yet, but good article princess. Man i cant wait till the season.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Very rarely are you on here when some of us are #80 but you're here now. I've been fine... getting my fall semester squared away. Crazy financial aid people make it a drag though to deal with everything. Had to ask a few questions today and it was like NO help at all. Am I surprised? Heavens no, typical every year.

    ReplyDelete
  43. lucky for me im in high school, have registration on Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah you said it #80, but thank you again! lol I'm with ya, so excited I'm about to lose my mind. I just want some football... so BORED!!!

Well maybe I want all chaos to break loose... I'll get on the intercom to the world and show "Dave is AWESOME". hahaha, that should go well! hehe

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah enjoy it now you little stinker... college is a whole new ball game. And I'm at a community college right now, can only imagine the chaos I'd cause at a huge university!! LOL, man I'd be a pain to those teachers. I never wanted to go to college in the first place but I got a scholarship (not your typical kind though) and was talked into it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. yeah after high school ill weigh my options, it would be my dream to play pro ball but God knows whats for me. I also am looking to might join the military. Just a few things i have on my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  47. anyways back to football, what teams do you expect to surprise this season other than the Broncos.

    ReplyDelete
  48. No college for this kid. Did 2 years art school, though. Won a 2 year scholarship.

So, Bronco#80, what do you think Denver will finish up with for a record this year? I say 10-6. Win the division, play the Wild card Chargerettes and whoop them in Denver. After that? Who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tell me about it I have like a million things I've thought about doing if Interior Design doesn't work out. If it doesn't work out, my next choice would make my mother faint but I've always wanted to follow my dad's footsteps and be a police officer. So if my first choice falls through... I'm going to the police academy!! haha, sounds funny but I'm dead serious.

    ReplyDelete
  50. ill go look at the schedule real quick.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ashley, if you were at a big college, we'd all be seeing you on one of them "Girls Gone Wild" video's, ha, ha. She would turn into a wild animal in her 1st year. Big colleges corrupt. The frat boys are all about the party and the girls. The frat girls are all about the party and the boys. I'm surprised that they actually learn something through all the juvenile antics they do?

    ReplyDelete
  52. im thinkin probably 10-6 or even 11-5 i say we lose to Patriots, Steelers, Giants, Colts, Eagles, and maybe Chargers once or Ravens.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Don't be a cop, Ashley. Be a cheerleader for the Broncos, ha, ha. Rah, rah, ree, kick 'em in the knee. Rah, rah, rass, kick 'em in the other knee, ha, ha.... and what did you think I was going to say?????

    ReplyDelete
  54. and the police for my princess, i wouldnt want you to get hurt, ive thought about police but there underpaid for the job they do,i dont know i might end up doing that or maybe a firfighter.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hmmm, and that's exactly why you'll never find me at a big university, too much crap!! I'm stronger than that to let that stuff get to me. That is the main reason why I never wanted to go to college... also explains a little why a little part of me still wants to be a cop.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think we'll beat the Ravens. I think the Giants will fall, also. I say we split with the Dolts and the Traiters. We lose to Colts, NE and Eagles. We lose to Washington. We shock Pittsburgh at home. I think we could beat NE but I'm bot sure. If we do, then 11-5. Hey, anything better then 8-8 is an improvement and McD is a hero.

    ReplyDelete
  57. hey have you thought of being a cheerleader, im sure youd be good, and plus you could make articles on DB.com and we could see alot of pics of you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. So true #80, they are underpaid but I've got it in me to be like my dad. He was a cop... like father, like daughter! I'm a tough girl, you would be more afraid of me than I would of all the danger that job involves.

Me a cheerleader?????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! hahahahaha... psh, my cousin wants to do that for the Broncos. The one family member, by blood, I don't get along with. And seriously... rah rah ree??? hahaha too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I had thought about being a cop when I got out of the military. Decided against it. Seen enough death and pain. Also, the military made me a little short tempered. Had to regroup when I went back to civilian life.

    ReplyDelete
  60. this year will be a success if we have a winning season and the Broncos will be back in SB contention!! YIp EE

    ReplyDelete
  61. Cheerleading is the one thing I cannot stand. I just don't get the point, never will.

I think we'll be 10-6 as well and at least get a playoff berth. We'll be up against the Chargerettes and we'll take back the West.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yeah i know i was just kidding with the cheerleading thing. lol

    ReplyDelete
  63. yep 10-6 sound about right, LT's age will catch up to him this season and Sproles will be smushed like a bug by Dawkins, WEAPON X.

    ReplyDelete
  64. After watching the Dorphins go from 1-15 to the playoffs the next year, after getting a new coach, a new system, a new QB, anything is possible and I now know it is possible because, well, we've all seen it be done. Denver has more talent then I have ever seen since the days of Elway and TD. Knowshon is going to make a HUGE impact! Dawkins is going to be a headhunter on the field. A vicious safety is always a big boost to any defense. The 2ndary, as a whole, will be awesome to watch. Soooo much friggin' talent.

    ReplyDelete
  65. guess who's back?... back once again?... Chris is back. Chris is back. Chris is back. Chris is back back back.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Cheerleaders are a "guy thing" Ash. I remember a commercial where there was 2 guys sitting in the football stadium seats, by themselves, beers in hand. Empty of any fans. They panned the camera down to the field and there were the cheerleaders, practicing. The camera panned back to the guys who were still watching the girls, attentively. The one guy says to the other, "Boy, I sure miss football." It's a guy thing.

    ReplyDelete
  67. i saw some where that the Broncos have the oldest secondary between champ, goodman, hill, and Dwakins since 2000. our future secondary will be Smith, Jack Williams, Barret, and Bruton or Mcbath.

    ReplyDelete
  68. ut oh here come trouble, just kidding Doc.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Could be all of them. Jack is the only one I'm unsure of to make the team. He looked good in preseason but slipped after that.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I will be having to get off for a little while. I have a roast in the oven and I'm preparing the rest of dinner for my dad and I. Will be eating in about 20 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  71. i still remember last year in the preseason when he picked off a pass and spun of a whole bunch of defenders for a TD.

    ReplyDelete
  72. What, did everybody leave???? Doc says hi then doesn't speak? Bronco#80 and Ash disappear?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I know cheerleading is a guy thing, got that part figured out... what I was meaning is I don't get why anyone would want to do it! Of course it makes sense when you have someone like my cousin... she fits the description to a "T". Now I'm saying all cheerleaders are all the same, had a really good friend in high school who was a cheerleader and she wasn't like the rest of them (ditzy and blonde). Still can't figure out why she liked it but everyone has their choice of poison.

Well and I figure with how this team has changed we're back to being the under dogs that aren't being given a second chance. Just have to go out there this season and get a winning record like we did our SB years. This new team is capable of it, they just have to produce. Maybe, just maybe they'll figure out the meaning of the word "teamwork" this year! What a concept!

    ReplyDelete
  74. That was preseason. He was missing coverages after that which is why he didn't start. I think he has potential and hopefully last year gave him experience.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Boy that dinner sounds good Dave... making me hungry. I've been like a hoover vaccuum today... eat anything in sight! LOL, good thing my metabolism is through the roof!! hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  76. Im here. just nothing to talk abbout.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Whoops, meant to say in that one post that I know all cheerleaders AREN'T the same.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Same here, and im trying to gain weight to bulk up more for football season, i think my hamstring is back to normal and i will start going back to practice on monday.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think it's good that they are the underdog. Makes them play with a chip on their shoulder. Makes it just that much more special and exciting for them and the fans, as well, when they win. Mile High Magic! Much the way I felt when Denver played in 1977 with the Orange Crush and also in the Elway/TD era. It's just that much more enjoyable to watch. The Broncos bar will be a madhouse!

    ReplyDelete
  80. How much do you weight Bronco#80? How tall are you?

    ReplyDelete
  81. im a pretty undersized reciever but im quick and my coach says im the best route runner on the team. Im 5' 5' and weigh 120.

    ReplyDelete
  82. id like to think as myself as a Eddie Royal type, i love Ediie Royal.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah I love it when they get brought back to reality when they become the underdogs. Think it makes them play more as a team than as superstar individuals who think they run the place.

    ReplyDelete
  84. HAHAHA, cannot believe you sent me that email Dave... too funny! Am I the girl in the middle you were referring to? And the picture won't show up, not that I'm desperate to see a picture of some cheerleaders.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm 6' and 200lbs. I could play WR or safety when I was younger.

Doc, Ash, I sent you an email with some cheerleaders. Check it out.

Doc, if you're bored, try correcting your article. Make it worthy of your position as site head honcho.

Well, I have to go prepare dinner. be back in about an hour.

    ReplyDelete
  86. No, not you. The Hispanic girl. (I used to date a girl from E. LA who is a Raiders fan, ha, ha).

    ReplyDelete
  87. Well like I said can't see the picture but I'll take your word for it. The Chargers part was so funny.

    ReplyDelete
  88. im only 15 to so i have some more growing to do.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  105. WOW, where on earth did that come from Aussie???? Dude, you better watch it!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Princess would have had to be like 7 when she had us i think, is that even possible? If so whos our Daddy.

    ReplyDelete
  107. hahaha, that was funny Aussie.

    ReplyDelete
  108. 80, I just sent you an email.

    ReplyDelete
  109. And trust i Know that you would be my clone if we were clones Chris.

    ReplyDelete
  110. who was born fist? when is you're birthday?

    ReplyDelete
  111. That's the way it was at my school and we had a pretty small school. 500 kids in high school (9, 10, 11, 12). Compared to other high school's in our conference we were the smallest. Heck when we were freshman, some of the guys in my class made the varsity team cause they were good enough. Its rare, very rare but it happened. This one guy I had the biggest crush on made it on varsity all 4 years. Football never looked so good!! hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  112. So wait, I married John Lynch?? Hey... LOL

    ReplyDelete
  113. my school is pretty small. 650 people 9-12.

    ReplyDelete
  114. alright, thanks Chris

    ReplyDelete
  115. No. you were only 7. wait...how could that work?...

    ReplyDelete
  116. with the exception of Dave everyone who blogs here is fairly young.

    ReplyDelete
  117. My school has 3250 kids so yeah its pretty hard in football, were the biggest shool in NM.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Well its pretty gross that I would be 7 but I'll take John Lynch!! My God he's hot!!! hahaha, like you all wanted to know that. Well now you do, hehe!!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Alright thanks princess.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Good night nurse... 3250 kids at your school!! Sheesh!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. LOL, yeah its a very short email. If you need/want Dave's email, let me know. Sure he won't mind. lol

    ReplyDelete
  122. John Lynch and you took him at 7, I would feel sorry for you.

    ReplyDelete
  123. 80, you alomst have more kids in you're schol then I do in my town.

    ReplyDelete

  130. Well this was last year, this year there opening another high school called Cleveland high, im gunna go to. So thats good, you should see our football stadium, its awesome. The turf is electric Blue. The school is as big as a college campus, so it will be less pacted. 170. I resent the pics. Don't know why they didn't show up? I forwarded it. Matbe I have to send them as a reply and change the name of the person I'm sending it too? Hmmmm. Mystery.

    ReplyDelete
  171. HEY, no copying my name on this site Doc or whoever. There are boundaries that I don't appreciate being crossed. Why do you think I left the site last time, Doc?

    ReplyDelete
  172. If people pose as others, it creates confusion and sometimes creates a problem with other bloggers who thought it was that actual person. Just like Chargertom. I'm not ammused and have no sense of humor in this matter.

    ReplyDelete
  173. McDusche is going to have to sprinkle some of his "magic dust" (or whatever he's got) on Orton, steal all of the opposing D's signals/plays (the Billicheat method, in which I'm sure he's well versed), and scheme his butt off in order to get Orton to look good and for the offense to go anywhere. No defense in the league is scared of Orton, and the Broncos will be struggling against 8+ man fronts a l l y e a r l o n g.
