The 2009 - 2010 Season - Part 1

Well it was an odd year indeed, full of hope and then great disappointment. And it will lead into an Offseason of great interest with many moves ahead and an interesting draft. Which is pretty much how this year started. First with the firing of long time HC Mike Shanahan and then the surprise hiring of coach McD. Which was then followed by the monster trade of Jay Cutler and the unrest of WR Brandon Marshall who wanted to be traded.

The season was predicted to be a failure for the Broncos with many 'experts' saying the Broncos would win no more than 3 games this season, namely Jamie Dukes. The reason being that the Broncos had downgraded at QB from Cutler to Kyle Orton and that they hadn't upgraded their D-Line.

The Preseason didn't start great with the Broncos winning only 1 out of the 4 games. The Broncos seemed to make a lot of mental errors, but I think all the players were trying to get use to the new systems that were put in place. For example the Kyle Orton left handed throw, though now we know that Chris Simms couldn't do much better in that department. But as most Broncos fans saw there was a lot of young talent and promise in this team myself included. Now I am going to say I didn't think we would make the playoffs this year but I thought we would go close to 10 wins. Reason being that this was really a rebuilding season and it won't be till next year or even a few more good years before we become a feared team again. A few good Offseasons and we will be set.

Now on to the season and the first six games of the year, the highlight to many Bronco fans years.

F 12 - 7 vs Cincinnati
The Broncos played at Benegals home stadium to start off the year in what was a close hard fought defensive game. Also during pregame special teamer and fullback Spencer Larsen was injured in a freak accident that injured his shoulder which keeped him out for several weeks. To the game and the Broncos managed to hold off the Benegals for almost the entire game until the final minutes allowing the Benegals to get an late TD and the lead. This game would be decided on a Hail Mary pass to Brandon Marshall in triple coverage which was deflected to Brandon Stokley. Who was in the open field and ran in an easy TD that was the winning play. Which has now be named the 'the immaculate deflection' and will be remembered in Broncos folk law for a long time.

F 27 - 6 vs Cleveland
The second game of the season was another good one for the Broncos. As the Broncos run game came to town and Buckhalter ran all over the sorry Browns. Aided by his teammate Knowshon Moreno the Broncos managed to show what they way able to do on the ground with good run blocking. Against a bad team (at the time) the Broncos really needed to show that they were a force and dominate a lesser opponent. Also in this game Elvis 'Doom'ervil managed to record 4 sacks on Quinn and it would be the start of a good season for him.

F 23 - 3 vs Oakland
This game isn't very memorable as the Raiders were merely a small bump in the road as the Broncos drove over them. QB Russell had a great game for the Broncos throwing intercepts to Goodman and Hill and the Broncos offense managed to capitalized on these mistakes and win an easy game.

F 17 - 10 vs Dallas
Now this was suppose to be the first game that was a true test for the Broncos against a tough opponent. And that was what happened, a really tough contest and a hard fought game. The Broncos took the lead when the Beast Brandon Marshall took a grab high above CB Newman and ran around Cowboys defenders for the score. For his celebration he ran down the Broncos sideline and gave the Broncos coach a big hug, making it look like the bridges between them had be mended. The game would be close with it going right down to the wire where Romo made a big mistake trying to take on Champ Bailey. You would have thought he would know better since Champ had already picked him off and stopped a scoring opportunity. Champ knocked down Romo's pass in the endzone on 4th down to secure the win for the Broncos.

F 20 - 17 vs New England
After beating the Cowboys, the Broncos where agian doubted and people keep saying that the Cowboys were a bad team. But when they faced the Patriots people knew this would be a big game with McD taking on his old team. This was a hard fought game, the Pats took an early lead and the Broncos managed to tie up the game in the 4th. The game would go to over time where the Broncos won the toss and moved the ball down field where Prater kicked the game winning field goal. But it is the moments that happened after this game that made it special. With McD celebration after the game and the fist pumping towards his family in the crowd was a magical moment.

F 34 - 23 vs San Diego
After the big game against the Patriots the Broncos would come up against a tough game against the Chargers who were at home. This was an odd game with 3 kick returns going for touchdowns. 2 of which were by Eddie Royal who had the best ST game of the year. The Broncos defense also helped greatly by sacking the crying Phillip Rivers 5 times. Also Tony Scheffler had a big game against the Chargers secondary as well and had over 100 yards and a TD. This was a big win for the Broncos and the players were flying high.

This would be the last game of real joy as after the bye the Broncos would tumble. But at this point the Broncos were on top of their game and playing good defense. The Broncos were posed for a deep playoff run and the Broncos fans were more than happy. In part 2 will look at the next 6 games and in part 3 will have a look at the last few games and the Offseason ahead.

  3. I can't believe Mike Nolan is gone

  4. hello everybody! Its been a verrrry verrry verrrrrrrrry long time. So let me tell you why I have been missing for so lonng. Simple as this, I couldnt access this website because my brother had found a way to not let me get on most football sites. He put a program called safe eyes on my computer and he just yesterday took off the program. He said I was obssessed with football and needed to take a break from keepin up with it every second of the day. My brothers a REAL JERK! Anyway like I said he just took it off yesterday. I think ive been gone since about the 6-0 start. As we all know alot of things have changed since then. Man I dont know what happened after that fast start. Looks like this will be a similar offseason to last one. In the draft I think we should target a D-line men after I saw what Jamaal Charles did to us and even the RAIDERS! I just saw that Mike Nolan resigned, man thats a huge blow to us, wonder if things heated up between him and McDenver. He changed our defense from 28th ranked to the 8th ranked defense in 1 year! Man I hope this doenst change the style of Defense we play. Hope things workout with our D. And the playoffs right now, who would of thought the JETS would be contenders. Crazy huh. I would also like to congratulate Jazzy Frizzle on his FF championship. Anyways like I said its been a lonnng time since Ive been on here and Ill probably be on here just about every day now. GOOD TO BE BACK!!

  5. Welcome back #80, a NT is a must, also the one thing Nolan didn't fix was the ran defense, from 27th to 26th not great.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks Aussie, I say D-line 1 round, maybe QB second round, and I really like the small electric RB Mcluster from Ole Miss in the 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think we move down in the first and pick up Mt Cody and have an extra second rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  8. do you mean NT Terrance Cody from Alabama?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yep, now that is one big man

    ReplyDelete
  10. yeah hes a beast, alot of people have us taking Alabamas MLB Mcclain, best MLB in the draft but im not sure. OH and I really like RB Dexter Mcluster from OleMiss in the draft in the 3rd round, hes like Darren Sproles, but alot more nastier and runs with a passion. Hell run you over and hes really small.

    ReplyDelete
  11. oh and hes really fast like sproles, lightning bug

    ReplyDelete
  12. Cool I will keep my eye out for him. If we stay at that position we will probably take McClain, but I say trade down and get another 2nd, pick Mt. Cody in the 20s and maybe if lucky Taylor Mays in the early second or another D stud.

    ReplyDelete
  13. yeah althought Darcel Mcbath is going to become a heck of a player once Dawkins retires, he has a bright future i think. Dont we have 2 second round picks this year since we traded our first to seattle last year?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Darcel should be good heres to hoping, but we traded this years first for last years second rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well I guess that explains it... was wondering what had happened to you #80. Just figured you got real busy with school. I know that's what will keep me extremely busy this semester. I have just 5 more classes to get through then I can graduate in May!!!

WOW, I am stunned and shocked that Nolan resigned. Man the way he changed our D in under a year is what made us so good at the beginning. Wonder what happened... whatever did happen though all I can hope for is that we find another D coach that knows what the heck he's doing and can keep our D alive. Guess this is where the drama that is our offseason begins!! Yikes... not sure I want to know what else is going to happen.

    Anyway, welcome back #80.

  16. oh yeah, what do you think of taking a QB in the 1 round like Tebow, Mccoy, Bradford, or Clausen

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tebow, doesn't have the mechanics would be alot of work
McCoy reminds me to much of Orton
Bradford has been injuryed and Shanny wants him
And Clausen I think will get drafted too high for us.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey Princess, thanks. Have been really busy with school also, have an essay im finishing up now thats due tomorrow. After im done ill probably be gettin to bed since i have school tomorrow have to wake up at 5 for offseason football, were gunna be something special next year with all the training were doing year round.

    ReplyDelete
  19. yeah i guess your right, at of them all i would take Bradford if he was available

    ReplyDelete
  20. Depending on what crazy thing McD does with our QBs if Orton doesn't work out, I say we should give Brandstater a chance instead of drafting one. All the ones in the draft have some kind of issue like Aussie stated. We have a rookie that has the potential to be the real thing for us... and instead of wasting a draft pick on a position we already have we should stick with Orton and the rookie and see what magic can be done with them. We need to focus our draft picks on something other than QB. IMHO, we have all the guys we need as long as none of them are traded in FA or something else... we just need a fool-proof system that will stick.

    ReplyDelete
  21. what if Marshall goes bye bye this offseason do you think Dez Bryant would be a good choice in the 1st?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Someone who was really quite this season was OLB Mario Haggan, was that a good or bad thing, was he doin his job?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe but we would need to get a 1st in return for Marshall. I think Bradford also has some other issues as well. I think we need to cut Simms and also see what Brandstater can do. But DL and OL are the big needs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 51 tackles and 3 force fumbles, he and Ayers rotated alot.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If Marshall ends up going, we definitely need to get a good trade out of it. Trading his talent for draft picks doesn't do him justice but if it happens we need to make sure we get a good deal out of it b/c whichever team picks him (and I assure someone will) McD for one will miss his talent on the field. I honestly think Marshall has cleaned up his act, he's not the egotistical WR he was this time last season. He deserves as second chance. If people thought we were out of our minds when we traded Cutler... just wait till Marshall gets traded (hopefully he won't, we need him).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Time for me to go. Talk to guys later.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah hopeful we get a kings ransom for him, a 1st and maybe a 3rd if not a 2nd. That would help alot. I also posted this on another blog but what if we:

    Trade Scheffler
    Trade Hillis
    Trade Champ
    Trade DJ
    Trade Marshall

What sort of Kings ransom would we get?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bye princess, good night

    ReplyDelete
  29. wow that would be alot. I think all of those are possibilities except for champ and DJ. Mcdaniels said he wants Champ to stay this season and will pay him his high paycheck next season. DJ is just to good and isnt muck of a talker, hes a leader.

    ReplyDelete
  30. but what would we get for Scheffler, Hillis, and Marshall.

    ReplyDelete
  31. maybe we could get Anquan Boldin and something else from the cardinals.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sign Schef to a low tender, meaning that we would get a second rounder for him as that is what was used on him.

Hillis maybe not so much, maybe a 5th at highest or lower.

    And Marshall maybe a 1st and probably a 5th.

The original idea for Champ and DJ being there is that McD wanted to trade defensive players and Nolan wasn't happy about that so he left, but I now believe that is not the reason Nolan resigned.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Boldin is alot of money though?

    ReplyDelete
  34. anyways im headin to bed now. so laters Aussie

    ReplyDelete
  35. i think Nolan left because of control issues, but im not sure, things will clear up in the next few days

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nolan signs with the Fins, well that was fast, I wonder who we will get?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't know who we'll get but it better be someone REALLY good... plus we have a few other spots to fill. And to think this is only the beginning of another dramatic offseason. Not sure I'm ready for this!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  38. To be honest I find it fun, you have no idea how much the blogs have blown up since yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  39. look like we will mostly likely sign ex-patriots DC Pees who just just left the pats last week. McDaniels worked with him for 5 years in NE. The other person is LB coach Martinale getting promoted. If we sign Pees we will stay with 3-4 im pretty sure because hasnt NE had a pretty good defense the past few years? Right now im pretty sure it will be Pees.

    ReplyDelete
  40. and about offseason I think its pretty fun also.

    ReplyDelete
  41. just looked at Bucky Brooks 1st mock draft on nfl.com, i dont what that guys smokin that mock draft is ridiculousey stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The first and only QB in the 1 round he has on the draft is Bradford going as late as 26 in the 1st, if theres one of those Qbs we were talkin about above in the 2nd round available to us id take a chance on any of them in the 2nd round.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah I agree, he has no idea, the Skins will take a QB as Mike will want his guy, and Campbell will be on the out. That may be bradford but at 4 that is probably too high for him. The skins probably would move back because that is Shanny's style. Also I think that there will be more skill positions like RB and WR than he listed.

    ReplyDelete
  44. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_14224493

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have nothing against offseason, it is fun, my main concern right now is Marshall. I believe in him, I believe he's changed for the good and for that we need to keep him... then you add his talent to that. Trading him in FA would be hands down the dumbest move McD could make (if that's what he's planning to do, which I fear it is). I've stuck up for McD and if that is part of his "master plan" then he's dumber than a bag of hammers. My fear right now is come March, McD will make the entire Bronco Country look like idiots. Marshall is needed here and all I can say is I hope McD realizes that ASAP.

    ReplyDelete
  46. yeah if marshall gets traded I think things could really go downhill in this organization. Right now were right under bump from being a elite team. .500 is very marginal we need to establish a winning record in the next few seasons and not stay .500 or go below .500. If we trade Marshall things could really get ugly next season.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Getting rid of Marshall would be dumb, because he would then need to replace him, with someone like Dez Bryant. I think McD will resign Marshall and then look for a legitimate 2nd WR so royal can finally play the Slot.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I was checking out some vid on your CJ Spiller and man can that dude ran. In some mock they have him going two after where we pick, it won't be a stretch if McD picked him for the return threat and speed like Chris Johnson.

I watched vid on McClain too, he seems slow at the point of attack, he isn't real quick misses tackles and can't coverage. I hope I ain't seeing things but he doesn't look good.

And Dexter Mcluster does look good, a smaller version of CJ Spiller.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dez Bryant also looks good, it would be great if we had, BMarsh, Dez and with Royal in the slot.

    ReplyDelete
  50. im not sure we need anymore WR, I think Gaffney could be the answer. Did u see how he played when marshall wasnt. Gaffney could play outside and royal could go to slot.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think that Gaffney is the answer, he isn't the deep threat with size we need. He is to similar to Royal and Stokley. Dez would be the answer for a deep threat with size, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just dont think we should get a WR in the 1 round this year. We have to many other needs like DE, NT, ILB, CB, QB

    ReplyDelete
  53. Me too, but we said that about RB last year and look how that turned out.

    ReplyDelete
  54. yeah i guess your right

    ReplyDelete
  55. Marshall is a must keep
