Why Champ Bailey may be Traded

I know what you are thinking, Aussie are you crazy, what you been smoking man. But hear me out, I had this idea recently and I thought it could be something interesting to discuss and explore further. Now remember this hurts you as much as it does me. No Bronco fan wants to see Champ traded but it could become the hard truth. Know I am not doing this lightly.

Let’s being then, it has been said that Champ will be moved and finish his career at the safety position. Champ recently signed a new 4 year deal with the Broncos. It is my belief that he would spend the next two years of that deal playing the corner position. After those two season he would now be 35 years old (also happy birthday Champ for a week ago) and by then he has probably slowed down enough to not be considered ‘elite’ anymore. For this reason he will be moved to play the Free Safety position (he isn’t big enough to play SS I think). He will play safety for the final two years of the deal with the hope that if he succeeds at the position he may see another deal. I am thinking a 3 year deal so that he retires when he is 40.

This is where I get to my current dilemma and issue for my reasoning why Champ will be traded. Currently we have Brain Dawkins on the roster, we will get one more good year out of him and Dawkins will push for another (he wants a Championship). Dawkins isn’t the problem. He should have finished up or retired by the time Champ wants to make the change. The problem lies with the four other young safeties on the roster. McBath, Bruton, Moore and Carter. Bruton will be a backup and ST until he shows improvement. McBath and Moore will fight it out for that FS spot and Carter most likely has a very good look in at SS.

And here is the problem. In two years from now are you going to boot out a young and up-and-coming player (Moore/McBath) from a starting role for an ageing Superstar (legend, awesomeness, god etc)? This is the problem I see, if Moore, McBath and Carter even Bruton for that matter excel at the position would we bench them for Champ? I don’t know. Fox does like veterans and that plays in Champs’ favour but is he willing to undertake the experiment. This gets to the crux of my reasoning, we will trade Champ to a team willing to undergo the safety experiment and who doesn’t have much safety depth and we would get some picks in return. I don’t see any/many GMs or coaches taking an ageing experiment over a young and established player.

A lot of things can change between now and then though. The young safeties could tank, have injuries, etc; allowing Champ to side into the position easily. Maybe Champ is so good at corner we keep him there for the life time of the deal.

Otherwise the Broncos front office (if it is still EFX) will need to make some hard decisions on Champ in a few years. For me I hope to see Champ play out his career in Broncos colours and we find a way to keep him on the roster. But then having him playing off the bench or in special packages, is that doing a disservice to him? Let me know what you think. ~ Aussie

  1. It is actual the similar situation we would go through now with Dawkins. If Moore or McBath tear it up to we bench Dawkins? Or kept the star player on the field?

I really didn't like writing this as Champ is my favourite player. Champ would be my celebrity free pass (usually a guy picks a hot actress or the such, but I picked Champ). I model my own game off Champ so I don't want to see him go.

Anyway, check out the Virgil Green post I did, also I am out for a while so catch you when I get back.

  2. Well that's the saddest post I've read in awhile. lol I come back on here to read that, I'm already bummed out at the thought of no season. You little bugger! Honestly though, I think Champ will retire before he lets himself get traded.

Anyhoo, sorry I've been gone for so long. Got a job out at the airport doing minor security stuff and in between working & catching up on my sleep I haven't been able to come on here or haven't felt like doing my article. For the first few days they had me working, I had to get up at the butt crack of dawn & they kept me there till 7:30pm. I literally almost fell asleep on the first day. lol I now have more reasonable hours but it still gets a little boring at times. Anyway, I will try to get that article out, someday soon... its been bugging me.

Not that anyone on here is paying attention but the USA killed it on their first game in the World Cup!! Can't wait for Saturday & game 2! USA is gonna wipe the floor with Colombia. muwahahaha Not that I'm surprised but AUS couldn't get a win over Brazil. That would've been a miracle. Brazil is a very strong team. Come back soon Aussie!! haha

  4. Well I had fun away, I guess everyone else has been busy. I had hoped this deal would have been done by now, but oh well.

And Princess how about those Aussie girls haha, I was hoping for the matchup against the US team, but you girls couldn't get it done against Sweden.

  5. Well the Aussie girls couldn't beat Sweden, oh well, I don't see the US getting passed brazil though.

  8. Haha someone is happy, good on the US girls, who do they play now?

  9. Beyond happy. The game against Brazil was absolutely INSANE!! Went into overtime & then ended with a penalty kick shootout. Best soccer game I've ever seen. Freakin' awesome.

I too really wanted to see the USA play Australia. Was really looking forward to that. Would've been fun to see. Oh well, all I want is for the U.S. to win it all... they deserve it. 2 more wins & they got it.

  10. Yeah it does sound like a crazy game, I think the US will get passed France but I doubt they beat Sweden in the final, you got to hope japan beat the sweds.

  11. After watching that game, ANYTHING is possible. They can win the whole thing if they really wanted to, which I know they do. USA may have lost to Sweden twice this year but they can beat - especially if it means a World Cup Championship. And if Japan can beat 2 time world champs, Germany, no doubt anything is possible.

This really sucks cause I have to work tomorrow and won't know what happens till after I get off. I'll tape the entire game and then come home & watch it. I don't want to find out what happened and then watch it, takes all the fun out of it. Will drive me absolutely crazy having to wait all day.

  12. Well it will be an interesting end to the comp.

And I know what you mean about not watching the game live, same thing happened to me with the last state of origin game last week. It is pretty much the biggest rugby league game of the year. And you know we Aussies love our league. So I hated missing it.

  13. Wow japan beat Sweden that is big. USA vs japan now for the final hopefully princess doesn't read this till she has watched it haha

  14. No worries, I set the USA game up for recording today since I had to be at work, but once I got to work I just couldn't stand it and I looked it up on my phone to at least see if the U.S. won and I saw they did, 3-1 over France. Actually just finished watching the recording, awesome game.

Really surprised with Japan, we not only beat them twice in two friendly games in May but we shut them out and now all of the sudden they beat Germany & Sweden to get to the final. Told you anything is possible. Crazy, crazy stuff. Thank God I don't work on Sunday, cause I'm not going anywhere till that game is done. USA all the way!!!

  15. Will be an awesome game on Sunday, can't wait. Been waiting ALL YEAR for this game. I'll be livid if it doesn't go our way. USA has to win, they just have to. They really deserve it.

  16. Yeah I know the feeling, can't wait to know the score, so you look it up. That happens a lot to me with broncos games. Problem is I usually find out they have lost and then I need to know why, drives me crazy some times.

I also think the US team could be in trouble, Japan have just rolled two big teams and are on an emotional roll now. Plus they are the under dogs. They will be hard to beat.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah and while Japan is on that "emotional roll" that's where usually starts... they wear their emotions on their sleeves and is fogs up the reason why they are there. This is THE BIGGEST game of their lives, you gotta shove the emotions aside and play the game like it was just a normal game... which the USA does VERY well. They focus on getting the job done - celebrate later. One big reason why they upset Brazil so badly, Brazil thought they had the game in the bag. The U.S. team always has something left in them. It's games like those is why I always say "the game is NEVER over till that clock says 0:00" or in the case of soccer, till the ref blows the final whistles.

Japan will be a tough test but they are also in trouble. The U.S. is out to achieve unfinished business and always plays smart soccer. Very tactical team. I remind the world, we are ranked #1 for a reason and Japan has a HUGE test in front of them as does the U.S. Will be a GREAT game. Sunday can't come soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, the U.S. will have the majority of the fans in attendance on their side like they have in all the games of this World Cup. Just like playing a home game. HUGE HUGE HUGE advantage when it comes to a game like this. No doubt the U.S. fans will be a distraction for Japan... which I think is really funny & it will be.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes it will be tough for japan but who knows, like you said it isn't over till the fat lady sings.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's game day baby!!! Woooo Hoooo.... let's get this thing going!!!!!!!! I've been waiting for this one game ALL YEAR!!

    USA all the WAY!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. :( Sorry princess, so dang close!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Man. I'm depressed for you BP. What a bummer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Same princess, such a bummer and was so close. This is what I meant by on a roll, japan got on it and it is hard to overcome a team on that roll. USA went close but I had that feeling it wasn't meant to be.

There is always next time in a few years. Anyway almost time for some football! This weekend I think could be known as free agency weekend. Getting excited! Training camp for the broncos could be the 28th.

    ReplyDelete
  24. that is actually pretty funny for some reason, and I m with you man, can't wait to see what we do in free agency!

    ReplyDelete
  25. oh and so you ff'ers know, I tweaked some of the scoring rules, check em out and let me know what you think

  26. Haha I know, sounded funny to me. Sounds like we are going to go over Williams in a bad way.

And ok cool I will check it out.
